Bennett Elementary was selected to help
pilot the Bellevue School
District’s Science Discovery Program science
curriculum funded by the Bellevue
Schools Foundation. The
science curriculum is now fully implemented and consists of
various 6-12 week units
focused on physics, chemistry,
biology, earth, and
environmental science. The units use an inquiry-based approach to
teach science concepts through hands-on activities and experiments.
Students’ natural curiosity is encouraged with amazing results! Learn

curriculum by grade level at

Bennett Elementary's Young Scientist Week is much more than a science fair -
it is a week-long celebration of the scientist in every child! The Bennett PTSA
works to fund, develop, and staff the activities leading up to and during this
week. Your support helps every student at Bennett.
Any Bennett student can enter a science project for Young Scientist Week.
Science workshops will be offered to help get kids started (look for time and
date announcements in the Friday Flyer). Remember, you can really have a lot of
fun doing your project! Using an inquiry-based process, you will make
interesting discoveries and you will improve your skills in reading, writing,
researching, drawing, and higher level thinking at the same time! You can work
alone or with another Bennett student. All students who complete a project for
Young Scientist Week will receive a very cool science medal.
We aim for 100% participation by Bennett students. If students need help getting
started, plan for them to attend one of the Science Workshops (see dates below
for this year). Students can also print out the Science Project Worksheet (Download
below) and get an adult or older student to help work through it to get started.
There are also some great science web site links with ideas for projects and
experiments on the Bennett web site kids page.
Parents or students may want to read the Bennett Science Project Handbook (Download
below) for more information. The PTSA also offers low price science display
boards (order forms download below)
This year, Young Scientist Week will feature the following:
Student science projects will be on display in the school halls and
library from Monday through Thursday. Students will get to experience
sharing their discoveries with their classmates and buddies.
Download the Science Project Handbook
(below) for more information.
Visiting scientists from the Pacific Science Center will do hands-on
experiments in each classroom that are linked with the science curriculum in
each grade.
Fifth graders will participate in an environmental field course taught
by the Pacific Science Center/Mercer Slough Environmental Center.
Family Science Night will be on Wednesday evening. Plan to attend this
fun event with your children to see their science project displays and get
messy learning science with hands-on activities. Look out for particularly
wacky senior scientists – explosions have been known to occur!
Egg Drop Contest will
be held midday Wednesday. Students enter their designs to be dropped
from at height of nearly 70 feet. Plan to attend this egg shattering
event and cheer for your favorites! Download
the Egg Drop Contest Rules (below) for more information.
Science workshops will be held to help students come up
with a topic they are interested in and start planning their experiments.
The workshop will be open to students during their lunch recess, but
participants will be limited based on the number of volunteers available.
Location: Bennett LRC. Lunch recess workshops are scheduled on the
following dates:
Wednesday, January 24 2007
Wednesday, February 7th 2007
