WASHINGTON STATE PTA FOCUS DAY

Thursday, Feb. 17th 2004

Come to Olympia!.. or send a card to your legislators, email your legislators, phone your legislators, but please be a part of Focus Day!

Focus day is an opportunity for the Washington State PTSA to show its strength in Olympia.  Large numbers of PTA members (that means you) walking around the Legislative Campus makes a difference.  It makes it easier for all of us to do our jobs if our legislators know that hundreds of PTSA members took a day off from their busy lives, spending valuable time lobbying for children.  But at the same time, it's just not possible for some people to free up that particular day to come to Olympia.  So there are other opportunities for you:

·        Send your legislators a card: MUCH easier than you think as you do not need to mail the card.  Write down the top three Washington state PTA legislative goals on an index card making sure you put your name and address on the card.  Then have someone attending Focus Day hand deliver the card to the legislator.  If you wish, mail them to 2415 78th Ave NE, Medina, 98039 for hand delivery.  This should only take five minutes of your time.  Note: Our top three goals this year are 1) Simple Majority for School Levies and Bonds, 2) Critical Support Components for Education Reform & 3) Education Funding Study. Brief details of these issues are found at http://wastatepta.org/ clicking on LEGISLATION at the top of the page and then clicking Short Term Goals at the left of said page.

·        Email or phone your legislators on focus day. All this is very easy to do by going to the Washington State PTA website at http://wastatepta.org/.  You then click on the LEGISLATION box at the top of this home page.  This site is very simple to scroll thru!!!  It takes less than two minutes!

So......you see the trend.  Although physical presence in Olympia is the optimum show of strength, you can email, phone or mail. There is no reason why the Washington State PTA shouldn't have 2000 different people contact their legislators on Focus day. This would be an incredible show of strength.  Numbers ARE important to legislators.  Won't you please help us on focus day?

The Bellevue PTSA Council is chartering two busses to take to Olympia.  Transportation is FREE!  The bus leaves at 8am from the old Kmart parking lot and will return by 4pm.  Sign up today for the Bus by calling Dennis Gerlitz @ 425-455-0944.

SpringBoard

SpringBoard is a high level, comprehensive language arts program currently being implemented in all Bellevue middle school language arts classrooms.  The program targets the development of the students' analytical reading and writing skills through fiction and non-fiction.  SpringBoard helps the students learn, practice and master these skills and results in much higher student achievement levels.  Bellevue Schools Foundation funding provides teachers the training they need to make sure all students experience significant improvement in their literacy skills, and students of all abilities benefit.

National Board Certification for Teachers

The best investment the District can make is to support teachers through the rigorous National Board Certification process.  National Board Certified teachers deliver an excellent education for our students by demonstrating the highest standards for professional performance.  BSF is providing significant support for this effort by helping fund teachers' certification fees, teacher candidate mentoring, and providing a videographer to tape candidates' portfolios.
