LEGISLATIVE NEWS
*K-12 funding is at risk
*Contact your legislators
Midway through this year's legislative session, and it's clear that K-12 funding
is at great risk(Junk food bill is dead and a bill that would allow communities
to pay teachers housing allowances appears to be dead).Public school supporters
need to act now to head off major cuts in critical programs.
The governor has proposed a budget that would suspend both education
initiatives, I-728 and I-732, the teacher cost-of-living adjustment initiative,
plus cut another $112 million from other critical education programs like levy
equalization for poor districts, the nursing corps to help underserved children,
readiness to learn programs, anti-bullying training, and gifted programs.
We need only look south to see what Washington's future could be if these kinds
of cuts happen. In Oregon, the Portland School District is considering
shutting down schools five weeks early because of budget cuts. We
cannot afford to follow Oregon's path.(Portland teachers have overwhelmingly
ratified a contract that includes an unprecedented offer to work 10 days for
free, accept a 1 percent pay raise and other concessions to stave
off cuts in education spending and health benefits.!)
Please call* or email** your lawmakers today with this message:
Cutting K-12 funding is unacceptable! We do not want Oregon's reality to be
our future.Fully implement I-728 and I-732 and don't cut other education
funding. Do what it takes to find revenue to protect education funding.

and address along with your message and it will be passed on to your
legislators).
