Dear Bennett Families,

Well ... it seems like winter has blown through and we are all ready for an early spring.  Our kids have started their spring outdoor sports and the weather is actually teasing us to be outside a little longer each day.  As March rolls in, the PTSA is looking forward to some fun events!

Thank you to the library committee for working with Bennett staff to supplement the book collection available in our library.  In hopes of replacing specific out-of-date books in the nonfiction collection, the library will be hosting a book (or shelf of books) sponsorship program during March.  We hope you and your family will consider supporting this worthwhile cause.  The library's goal is to replace 200 books.  That is only 1/2 book per child at Bennett.  All of Bennett's students will benefit from this program!

So... How are the science projects coming along?  The Young Scientist Week committee has completed their project workshops and is planning the Family Science Night activities and experiments.  Please consider volunteering at Family Night as there are tons of hands-on experiments that need adult supervision.  If your child hasn't already started an experiment, please go online and check out the Young Scientist Week information at www.bennettelementary.org.

Our next General PTSA is scheduled for Tuesday, March 9th at 7:00pm in the library.  We will be summarizing the input we received at our fund-raising brainstorming meeting in February.  It looks like we will be sticking with some old ideas and trying some new!  The Nominating Committee is getting closer to presenting their recommended slate of PTSA Executive Officers.  Please plan to attend the General Meeting and become involved in this invaluable process of managing a parent, teacher & student association.

Finally, thank you everyone for working a little harder to make our parking lot and student drop-off areas safer!  It was fun to see the 4th graders out "training" as safety patrol.  The 5th graders probably appreciated the break!

Sincerely,

Kristine Keski

PTSA Co-President

ART CART

With PTSA funding, the Young Author Committee has put together an ART CART to encourage excellent and diverse art in the student’s YA books. We have a nice assortment of pens, colored pencils, markers, paints and paint brushes, a few fancy scissors and a corner cutter and paper cutter. In setting up the cart there are a few more things we could use:

*Quart and gallon freezer bags

*Plastic jars (recycled)-to hold small items

*“Moochie” packages (plastic carton form rice paper covered ice cream)-to mix paints

*Odds and ends of art supplies (interesting papers, pens, scissors, etc.)

If you wish to donate any of these items, you can bring them to the Bennett Office Attention: Sandy Eschen or Kris Young. Thank you so much!

Bennett Young Scientist Week

Young Scientist Week is March 22-26! We have a lot of busy students working on science projects and volunteers preparing for Family Science Night on March 24 – keep up the good work! Approximately 60 students participated in the after-school and lunch recess science workshops. Many thanks to all the parents and staff that volunteered to lend a hand getting kids started on their projects. If you still need help or ideas for your science project, go to the Bennett web site at http://www.bennettelementary.org

Display boards. The display boards will be in soon for our young scientists. If you did not order a board, a few extras will be available for sale at the student store. Michael’s, Staples, and other stores in the area also sell them (but at a higher price).

Questions? Call Ann Huseby at 747-8140 or Marian McDermott at 653-1235 with questions or to volunteer for Family Science Night.

Hats off to The Boeing Company, which has renewed its sponsorship by contributing $35,000 toward the purchase of ‘hands-on’ science kits and materials for middle school students!

Bennett Egg Drop Contest

Bennett will be having an Egg Drop Contest on Friday, March 26, to finish Young Scientist Week with a splatter! Students are challenged to design and build a container to hold a fresh egg that will allow it to be dropped from a height (~30 ft.) without breaking. This will be fun (and maybe a little messy)! Prizes will be awarded for different categories such as the survivor egg, most colorful, wackiest drop, etc. (Science medals will be awarded to kids that do science projects only.)

Many of the Bennett classes will be taking on this challenge as a class design project. Parents, please contact your teachers if you are willing to help. Mark your calendars and plan to attend to cheer on your favorite egg! The contest guidelines are posted on the Bennett web site at http://www.bennettelementary.org .

Questions? Call Ann Huseby at 747-8140 or Marian McDermott at 653-1235 with questions or to volunteer for the Egg Drop Contest.

THE BENNETT LIBRARY NEEDS YOUR HELP

Did you know that the average age of our library books is 17 years?  An ideal library would have books with an average age of 10 years.  Many of our older books are no longer being checked out by our students due to their outdated format.

During the month of March, we are holding a Bennett Library Book Drive.  A list of books that we need to update our non-fiction collection will be coming home with your child in March.  Please consider sponsoring an entire “shelf” or purchasing individual books your child may be interested in having in the library.  Then, wait a month, and have your child come in and sign their book, donating it to the Bennett library.

Your gift of reading is one that will truly make a difference in the lives of our children!  Please stop by the library if you have any questions.
