The exciting news is that we have over $25,000 in pledges for our awesome school!!! Please remember to turn in your pledge money as soon as possible. The first class with all of their money collected will win a pizza party and so will the class who raises the most money! Also, anyone who raises $100 will receive a fun pocket radio with headphones. All pledges are due by October 13th and prize winners will be announced on October 14th.
Thanks to the many volunteers who
donated their time to the walkathon, we couldn’t have done it without you! A special thanks to

2. K-12 Education Funding (26 votes)

I’ll be taking the issues we identified as most important to
us down to
The winning issues at the PTSA Legislative Assembly will become our PTSA legislative platform.
If you would like to learn more about any of these issues
and how you can help by becoming a PTSA child advocate, please contact carolynwatson@comcast.net. I’ll put you on my
legislative mailing list.
Specific duties include the following:
Being informed about the mission and goals of the school district and the Parent Advisory Committee and able to communicate these to newcomers.
Communicating regularly with school principal.
Contacting and welcoming each family for which a referral is received.
Offering to meet with family members at their schools or a public place to answer questions.
Creating trust in themselves as guides and as individuals who understand the challenges newcomers face; creating trust in the school system.
Informing parents who are unable to communicate to school staff without the aid of an interpreter that they may request one.
Helping families problem-solve in a new school environment.
In addition, we ask that mentor parents not share information received from newcomers with other parents, though there may be times, especially when safety is an issue, that information should be shared with the school’s principal and/or other authorities.
Training would include a component help mentor parents set limits to the support they are able to provide.
Examples of appropriate support include: guiding newcomers through the appropriate channels of communication in the school district; helping them understand daily routines and procedures in a school; pointing them to resources to answer questions about such topics as academic support, after-school programs, graduation requirements, and program options such as full-day kindergarten; explaining the purpose/contents of a school document in the newcomer’s native language; and offering to make a phone call on behalf of the newcomer to school or district personnel to make an appointment; and promoting positive interaction between parents and schools.
Examples of support that goes beyond the boundaries of the parent mentor position include: lending money, transporting families to appointments, preparing written translations of personal papers, and being involved in issues that go beyond the school building.

Scrip Update
This month we are trying something a little different with the scrip program. For your convenience, orders may be picked up at the PTSA meeting on Nov 1st. If you are unable to make it to the meeting we can make other arrangements for your collection. You will also have the opportunity to submit orders at the Multicultural Potluck on Oct. 21 which will be the order deadline for this round. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to support your school!
Those of you have used the program before may have noticed that the grocery stores were missing from the last order form. Sorry about that!
This month QFC/Fred Meyer and Top Food are back. Safeway is no longer participating in the scrip program but stay tuned for information on a new program which will enable you to support the school when shopping at Safeway and other major retailers.

From the Presidents
hat a wonderful turnout we had for
our annual Walk-a-Thon! It certainly
looked like everyone had a great time Walk 'n Rolling
to some wonderful tunes and great food. Don't forget to send a copy of those digital
pictures to the yearbook (bennettyearbook@gmail.com).
We are looking forward to our next fun events: Skate King on October 19th and our Multi-cultural night on October 21st in the gym--bring a dish and enjoy some great entertainment by our kids (and parents too!).
Please take a moment to read more about our new communication system ONE CALL NOW in this edition of the Friday Flyer. The more you know, the better the system will work!
And finally, have you thought about joining PTSA? Your membership does not mean you have to volunteer or even come to any meetings (but you are more than welcomed and encouraged to do so). Joining PTSA with a single membership ($8.50) or family membership ($15.00) is providing Leadership Development, Advocacy training, Insurance, and REPRESENTATION--a state-level voice to the legislature and on committees addressing public policy issues affecting families and children--YOURS and OURS! Join now--it benefits everyone.
Cub Scouting at Bennett!

If you missed the fist meeting where we handed out the Space Derby Kits, come anyway. We’ll have some extra rockets on hand to share. If you’re new to Pack 665 or Cub Scouting, please feel free to come check it out, get some information, and get connected with Cub Scouting at Bennett. Last year was a great year. This year is going to be even better! If you have any questions, please call Alan Black, Cubmaster, at (425)558-0867.
Coming soon to a phone near you: The ONE CALL
NOW system!
One Call Now is a system that automatically
calls the telephone number of your choice (home, work, cell phone) to provide
you with a pre-recorded message from Bennett's administration or PTSA. This will cut down on the amount of paper used
for take-home flyers, provide you and your family with a simple way to receive
information, and give the message's sender a way to make sure the call went
through to each family.
A flyer will be sent home soon to sign-up for
this service, and there will be no charge to your family to sign up.
