Volunteer

Dear Bennett Volunteer,

Welcome and thank you for investing your time to help make Bennett a quality leaning experience for all children. We are pleased to have your commitment to our youth.

Please check into the office to receive your volunteer badge and sign our book at the start of each visit. Feel free to ask for assistance from any staff member.

Safety for all children at Bennett is an important component of their educational process. We are sure you will agree that we want our children to feel secure and safe as they encounter the adventures of learning.

Thank you again for your commitment to Bennett Elementary. Your contribution is a vital one and will become an important part of the total instructional effort. We hope you enjoy the experience as much as the staff and children will enjoy having you as a member of our education team.

COMMUNICATION: THE KEY TO SUCCESS

More good volunteers have been lost because of poor communication than for any other reason. Please don't let this happen to you! You are an important part of the education team and are asked to cooperate with the school staff in the following ways:

  • A school is a place of business. CONSISTENCY OF ATTENDANCE IS IMPORTANT. Make a time commitment that is really workable for you.

  • Be reliable and always on time. Remember the children expect you and the teachers depend on you. Notify the office as soon as you know you must be absent.

  • Sign in and sign out each time you come to school.

  • Wear your volunteer badge whenever you are working in the school.

  • Discuss student problems only with the teacher with whom you are working.

  • Respect the confidentiality of anything you learn in the classroom. Children and their specific problems should not be discussed outside of school. Be professionally discreet. Never publicly discuss parents, children, or professionals.

  • Communicate your concern if you find that your volunteer position is not working of you. Talk it over with the teacher, the principal, the office manager, or the PTA Volunteer Chairperson.

  • Whenever possible, attend in-service training sessions for volunteers offered by the district.

  • Realize that your relationship to school personnel requires mutual respect and confidence.

  • Recognize that your volunteer contribution sets a fine example of an interested and informed citizen helping to improve community.

  • Remember that a school is a dynamic, ever-changing organization with not two days alike. Your plan that worked yesterday may not be good today. Be willing to fail once in a while. Everyone messes up an assignment sometime. It is part of really learning to work with kids.
